Frequently Asked Questions
Q:
My activation number doesn’t work.
A:

First, check to make sure that you entered your activation number correctly — maybe you’ve accidentally copy & pasted it with spaces or other invisible symbols. If you lost, or are unable to find your Activation Number in your email inbox, you can take advantage of our License Retrieval feature.

If that doesn’t help, please contact us via this form or call us at +1-(8775)-MACPAW at your convenience.

Why CleanMyMac 2 Doesn’t Work On OS X Yosemite?
A:

The OS X Yosemite-ready version of CleanMyMac 2 has been released (16 Oct 2014). Just launch CleanMyMac 2 and you’ll be prompted to update to the latest version (version 2.3). If for some reason the popup doesn’t launch, click CleanMyMac 2 in the menu bar and select Check for Updates.

Q:
I want to buy another copy of CleanMyMac 2. What can I do?
A:

If you’re looking to buy a second copy of CleanMyMac 2, we’ve got great news for you: your second CleanMyMac 2 purchase will be 30% off. Go to the MacPaw Store, scroll to the bottom of the page, click “confirming,” and then enter the email address you used to register/purchase your first copy of CleanMyMac 2. The entire store will then show your newly discounted prices.

Q:
I want to activate my copy of CleanMyMac on another Mac.
A:

If you don’t have multiple licenses, you can only activate one copy of CleanMyMac 2 with your activation number. If you wish to purchase multiple license, see our answer below. In order to activate your copy on a different Mac, please uninstall CleanMyMac 2 and contact our Customer Support, so that they can deactivate your CleanMyMac 2 license on your current Mac. Only after that, install CleanMyMac 2 on the Mac of your choosing. Now, you can activate your newly installed CleanMyMac 2 with your original activation number.

Q:
Can I recover an application that I’ve accidentally uninstalled?
A:

Unfortunately, no. However, if you have a Time Machine backup, you can revert to a date before you uninstalled the app to get it back. Otherwise, you’ll have to reinstall the app from its original location.

Q:
Can I recover a file/folder that I’ve accidentally removed?
A:

Unfortunately, no. However, if you have a Time Machine backup, you can revert to a date before you removed the file to recover it.

Q:
Is there a free upgrade for the next version of CleanMyMac?
A:

We would love to give out free upgrades for everything, however, we cannot afford to do so. We put a lot of time, effort, and resources into each and every one of our softwares and that by purchasing upgrades, you keep MacPaw going. So, short version: “Unfortunately, no.” Long version: “Thank you from all us here at MacPaw.”

Q:
Are there any educational discounts available?
A:

Yes, if you have an .edu email address, you can click here to receive your 30% off educational discount. Be sure to enter your .edu address at checkout.

Q:
What is the Ignore List?
A:

The Ignore List is a set of items (files, folders, apps, etc.) that CleanMyMac 2 skips over when scanning and cleaning your Mac. You can find the list in the CleanMyMac 2 Preferences, and can add or remove items from the list as you please. Again, if something is on the list, CleanMyMac 2 will ignore it. For more information, read How to Manage CleanMyMac 2’s Ignore List.

Q:
Does CleanMyMac 2 remove viruses?
A:

No, CleanMyMac 2 is not an anti-malware or anti-viral solution for your Mac; it’s a cleaning utility.

Q:
I’ve gotten a virus on my Mac with CleanMyMac, help!
A:

If you’ve gotten a virus from CleanMyMac, please read this article first, and then contact us immediately afterward: support@macpaw.com

Q:

A:

Yes, a single license of CleanMyMac 2 can be used on a single Mac by all its users.

Q:
I want to buy several CleanMyMac 2 licenses. Can I get a discount?
A:

Yes, multiple licenses are available for a discounted rate. You can either visit our store and use the 'Upgrade your License' feature, or email our Support Team for help with your purchase.

Q:
What are the limitations of CleanMyMac 2 Trial version?
A: The trial version of CleanMyMac 2 scans your Mac entirely, but only allows you to clean up to 500 MB of unnecessary files on your Mac.
Q:
One of my apps started working improperly. Can CleanMyMac 2 fix it?
A:

Yes. Go to the Uninstaller module and search for the app that works improperly. Click it and hit the Application Reset button. That will remove the preferences that may have caused the problem with the performance of the app.

If that doesn’t help, you can try to uninstall the application using the same module and then reinstall it. If this doesn’t help, we advise you to contact the developer of the app.

Q:
Can I edit the list of languages I'd like CleanMyMac 2 to skip during its cleaning?
A:

Yes. Go to the System Cleanup module, click Detailed Results, and then click on Language Files at the bottom of the middle column list. On the right, you’ll find a list of localizations grouped by languages. There you can deselect needed languages or localizations to keep them intact.

Another way to edit the list of languages that should be cleaned is by proceeding to CleanMyMac 2 > Preferences menu and select the General tab. There, at the bottom, you can edit the list of localizations. Add languages to the list that CleanMyMac 2 should not remove during a Full Scan.

Q:
What are “Unsupported Applications” in the Uninstaller module?
A:

If you like keeping your Mac up-to-date and perform software updates regularly, some of the apps you have had installed may become incompatible with your current configuration. In case you haven’t yet disposed of these applications, CleanMyMac 2 will find and list them, so that you can easily erase them.

Q:
After cleaning my Mac some of my apps started to work really slowly! Why?
A:

It’s more than likely that you just need to restart your Mac. Restarting your Mac will trigger your apps to begin generating new caches, which will increase the performance of your apps.

Q:
How do I figure out what extensions are safe to remove?
A:

If you don’t know whether a particular extension is safe for removal, you can disable it first to see what it does to your Mac. Please refer to our Knowledge Base for more detailed instructions.

Q:
How exactly does iPhoto Cleanup work?
A:

The iPhoto Cleanup module searches your iPhoto library for invisible versions of files that were automatically or manually modified. For instance, if you imported a photo from your camera and then rotated and cropped it, iPhoto will keep an unrotated, uncropped copy of it as a backup. You can remove these unnecessary copies to significantly decrease the size of your iPhoto library!

Currently iPhoto Cleanup works only with iPhoto '11 (version 9+).

Q:
Will CleanMyMac 2 work on my Mac?
A:

CleanMyMac 2 requires OS X 10.7 or higher and around 28.8 MB of free space to operate. If you haven’t upgraded your Mac to OS X Mavericks, Lion or Mountain Lion, then you should take a look at CleanMyMac Classic! It’s designed for Macs as old as OS X 10.4 and can clean up outdated caches, logs, system junk, application leftovers and other trash on your Mac.

Q:
Can I return my CleanMyMac 2 license and get my money back?
A:

If you want to know more about our refund policy, please refer to our Refund Policy.
