Gemini 2, the application that detects and finds duplicate files on a Mac, was selected among thousands of submitted projects in the category Communication Design 2017. The app was honored with the Red Dot Award for “high design quality, expressing aesthetics, innovation and precision in an exemplary manner”.
According to Red Dot, the Communications Design award acknowledges more than a unique, well-implemented concept: Besides the individual handwriting of the projects, the jury looks at clarity and emotion: Is the message adequately geared towards the target groups? Does the work affect the viewer in an emotional and sustainable way?
Agencies, designers and companies from 50 countries took part in the Red Dot Award: Communication Design. They submitted 8,051 projects in 18 categories. From these, the 24 jury experts selected the winners of the international competition. They gave the award for very high design quality and creative achievement to just 67 works.
Unlike many utilities, Gemini 2 does not look utilitarian. Its design uses the space theme, unwittingly set by its name, to lighten the mood. The sci-fi-inspired visualisation of the achievements gives the user a sense of reward, makes a tedious process more fun and helps to accomplish vital product goals, such as increasing engagement.
“We’re happy that Gemini 2 was honored by the professional jury. The “Red Dot” is an internationally recognised quality label for excellent design”, says Oleksandr Kosovan, the founder and CEO of MacPaw. “It inspires us to keep up with the high quality standards we set for our products”.
About Red Dot
The origins of the Red Dot Design Award date back to 1955. The institution behind the competition is the Design Zentrum NRW, which is led by Professor Dr. Peter Zec since 1991. Its distinction, the Red Dot, is established internationally as one of the most sought-after quality marks for good design. In order to assess the diversity in the field of design in a thorough and professional manner, the award breaks down into three disciplines: the Red Dot Award: Product Design, Red Dot Award: Communication Design and Red Dot Award: Design Concept – each award is organised once a year. From products to communication projects and packaging to design concepts and prototypes, the Red Dot Award tracks the most prominent trends worldwide.
