Monitor battery temperature

(Updated: )

To check the operating temperature of your Mac computer's battery, open the Menu, click Battery, and view Temperature.

The temperature is displayed in Celsius or Fahrenheit, depending on your system preferences (you can change this in System Settings > General > Language & Region > Temperature).

Battery temperature ranges

By regularly monitoring the temperature, you can quickly spot when the battery overheats and take action to cool it down. Your battery will last longer and work more efficiently if it operates within the optimal temperature range.

Here are the common temperature ranges for batteries:

  • 9°C (50°F) or less

Low temperatures can cause serious or even permanent damage to a battery. Move your Mac to a warmer environment as soon as possible.

  • 10–34°C (50-93°F)

This is the ideal operating range for the battery. Try to maintain this temperature whenever possible.

  • 35°C (95°F) or more

The battery temperature is too high, and the battery is overheating. Cool it down to avoid degradation.

Cooling the battery down

High temperatures can quickly and severely damage your Mac computer's battery, so cooling it down is crucial to prolong its life. Here are some immediate steps you can take:

  • Connect your Mac to a power outlet to reduce battery load.

  • Ensure proper ventilation: place your Mac on a flat surface to avoid blocking air inlets, allowing fresh air to lower the internal temperature, especially around the battery.

  • Close apps that use a lot of CPU and RAM resources.

  • Unplug connected peripherals like external drives and monitors.

When there's no immediate overheating risk, take these precautions:

  • Use only original or Apple-certified charging adapters and cables.

  • Check the health and charging cycles of your battery – it may be time to replace it with a new one.
