A Fragmented App Ecosystem
Software 3.0 marks a shift beyond traditional AI assistance, where previous AI interactions were limited to just a chatbox and relied on the user to take action. In this new era, AI acts as an autonomous co-developer, a creative partner rather than just a tool.
Despite this, the mainstream tools we see coming out today are still stuck in the 1.0 era. While interacting with ChatGPT can feel like you’re having a conversation with an intelligent person, you’re still left to complete the tasks yourself. On the other hand, assistants like Siri and Alexa can complete simple tasks, like setting an alarm or sending a text message, but they often fail to understand real human intent, making interactions feel impersonal and robotic.
At MacPaw, we envision a future where AI assistants can complete tasks efficiently in a way that feels intuitive, responsive, and truly human-centered.
Eney: A New Kind of AI Companion – A “Computerbeing”
To bridge this gap, we knew we needed to create a universal interface that streamlines workflows and toggles between different apps. To solve this, we’re launching Eney – a first-of-its-kind AI assistant that transforms how users interact with their computers. But the term “AI assistant” doesn’t fully represent what Eney is, or what it can become. We didn’t set out just to create another AI assistant – we wanted to design something that can understand users on a deeper level. I call Eney a “Computerbeing,” an AI-powered companion with a distinct personality that transforms how people interact with their Mac by combining human-like intelligence with proactive task completion.
We’re developing Eney to simplify workflows and reduce the amount of time, and sometimes headaches, users often experience when interacting with their devices. Eney’s single, universal interface eliminates the need to toggle between and navigate different apps.
Eney is your digital co-creator. Its cheerful personality makes it easy to interact with; just tell Eney what task you’d like to complete and it’ll do the rest, helping you work faster, with less effort.
What Eney Does
We’re first launching Eney as an OS extension for Macs – an intelligent companion that lives on your desktop and helps you get things done through simple, conversational commands. Eney’s functionality is powered by built-in commands and a variety of integrations, including native MacPaw apps and third-party software provided by independent developers from Setapp, helping users do more in less time.
For example, if you want to remove the background of an image to isolate a subject, you can tell Eney to do so with just a simple command of “remove the background” or a similar phrase. By letting Eney handle small, but often time-consuming tasks, users can stay focused on their workflow without needing to launch a separate app and manually do it themselves.
Importantly, Eney is designed with safeguards in mind: it never takes action without the user’s permission. We’re also utilizing a family of local LLMs and models, with the goal of processing as many tasks as possible directly on your device – keeping your data private and your workflow fast – even when offline.
But this is just the beginning. Our vision for Eney goes beyond executing simple tasks. We envision a future where traditional apps are a thing of the past. Interacting with various software will be reimagined through Eney, a single, universal interface personalized to each user’s preferences and flow.
From Products to a New Ecosystem
For over 17 years, MacPaw has been laser-focused on enhancing the macOS and iOS user experience through simple, beautifully designed tools. Products like CleanMyMac, CleanMyPhone, and Setapp exemplify this, simplifying how people interact with their devices.
But today’s digital world is too fragmented. There are too many tools, too many subscriptions, and not enough truly personalized support. With our deep roots in the Apple ecosystem and growing AI expertise, we saw an opportunity to help define what Software 3.0 can truly become.
Eney is a meaningful step in creating a new kind of ecosystem where users and machines work in unison, one that empowers both users and developers through open communication and collaboration. We began this process with Setapp, our marketplace that hosts a thriving community of developers who create quality apps that deliver top user experiences. We’ll expand this vision with Eney.
In future iterations, Eney will be powered by a set of modular skills – small, focused capabilities that can combine into multi-step workflows. With this, Eney will be able to turn single user requests into a series of smart, automated steps, eliminating the need to jump between apps. Eney will improve through continuous user interactions; it’ll be able to offer increasingly personalized suggestions all while its character continues to evolve.
It’ll take a community to build the future we imagine. That’s why we are encouraging like-minded creators to join us in creating this new ecosystem. We’re committed to creating a community where developers can contribute skills, gain visibility, and be rewarded for their contributions – all while helping shape the future of intelligent, human-centered software.
