If you’re wondering why Gemini didn’t decide to select different sized files as duplicates, you should know that when Gemini scans, it looks at the content of each file, not the similarities. The difference in size between two (or more) photos means that the content is different. It may be a similar photo, video, or doc, but because the sizes of the files are different, the files are not duplicates. Thus, Gemini will not classify them as such when it scans.
