How to remove the SaveKeep browser hijacker from Mac?

Dating back to at least 2009, SaveKeep is a browser extension bundled with legitimate and illegal software. Once installed — whether you want it or not (and no one wants to get stuck with these sorts of applications) — it hijacks web browsers and presents adverts no one asks for.

Like other adware browser plug-ins, the only purpose behind these viruses is to generate income for those who create them. In some cases, these themselves can be hijacked by other cybercriminals to infect computers and even take over them, stealing valuable personal data, such as passwords.

Adware, such as SaveKeep, is a nuisance, and unless properly contained and removed, it can cause more serious problems. Adware operates similarly to legitimate advertising networks, with servers delivering adverts to web visitors, which means those servers are vulnerable to cyberattacks and a takeover by those who want to serve something more dangerous than adverts.

Clearly, keeping your Mac safe means removing SaveKeep and anything else that causes similar dangers.

How to remove SaveKeep manually

Firstly, this particular adware virus was not known to have infected that many Macs. So there is a good chance you don't have it. Secondly, it is thankfully easier to find and remove for anyone who was or still is infected than others that perform similar functions.

You have caught this adware infection while attempting to download the software using InstallMac. If that name rings a vague bell, then check your Applications folder for the following:

/Applications/Savekeep.app

If you find this, then go to your browsers (always best to check all of them, starting with your default browser) and locate the browser extensions and plug-ins. Versions of this extension might appear the following way:  SaveKeep, savekeep, saVe keeep, and suave keepo. Browsers all come with quick, simple ways to remove any plug-ins/extensions you don't want or need, so removing these should be easier.

Next, make sure to reset search engines and DNS settings back to your default. This way, you should avoid any recurrence of this or similar adware programs appearing on your Mac.

After this, manually check other files and folders in your Mac (Applications and Library are top priority) to ensure you've found any other trace of SaveKeep and removed it. Always take care when doing this to avoid deleting any program you actually need.
