Disk health and temperature aren't shown

(Updated: )

Disk monitoring is technically complex, and there are several reasons why the CleanMyMac Menu may not display health and temperature metrics. Let's explore the most common cases and their solutions.

Case 1: You're using the App Store version of CleanMyMac

In the App Store version, the Health and Temperature monitors aren't available due to a technical limitation known as "sandboxing". This restriction prevents apps from accessing data beyond their working directories.

To enable the Health and Temperature monitors on your Mac, you may want to switch to the MacPaw Store version of CleanMyMac.

Case 2: You haven't granted Full Disk Access to CleanMyMac

Without Full Disk Access, the Health monitor can't retrieve diagnostic data from your disk. Learn how to grant Full Disk Access to CleanMyMac and why it's completely safe for your Mac.

Case 3: Another app or service is occupying the diagnostic channel

It typically takes just a second for any app to receive a package of SMART diagnostic data from the disk. However, some apps don't follow best practices and fail to release the SMART channel after connecting.

To regain access to SMART data, close all apps or restart your Mac.

If health and temperature data are still unavailable after rebooting, a problematic app may be launching automatically in the background when macOS starts. Try turning off some login items.

Case 4: Your disk doesn't fully support the SMART diagnostic protocol

For some drives, you'll see only the OK status instead of a specific health rate or temperature. These disks don't support the advanced features of the SMART diagnostic protocol needed for detailed monitoring. However, even these drives can send enough information for the Health monitor to detect critical issues.

To check if your drive supports SMART diagnostics, you can use macOS Disk Utility.

  • If Disk Utility shows the SMART status as Verified, your drive supports SMART.

Make sure no other app or process is blocking access to the SMART channel (see Case 3 above).

  • If the SMART status is Not Supported, CleanMyMac won't be able to retrieve SMART diagnostic data, so health and temperature monitors won't be available.

If you choose to replace your disk with a new one, these monitors should work as expected.
