Smart Care

(Updated: )

Smart Care is the core of CleanMyMac and the starting point for optimizing your Mac. It combines the functionality of all CleanMyMac modules but doesn't fully replace them. One by one, Smart Care launches these modules to identify unneeded or harmful items and recommend optimizations:

  • Cleanup – Scans for system junk (like log files, cache files, broken login items, and other), mail attachments, and trash bins, and automatically selects items for removal.

  • Protection – Runs a Quick Scan for malware and automatically selects found threats for removal.

  • Performance – Suggests running periodic maintenance scripts and the Flush DNS Cache task.

  • Applications – Recommends app updates, excluding system apps and macOS updates.

  • My Clutter – Scans for duplicate files in your Downloads folder.

Run Smart Care

  1. In CleanMyMac, click Scan on the welcome screen.

The process may take a while, especially on older or heavily used Mac computers.

  2. After scanning, CleanMyMac shows the results.

To rescan, click Start Over on the upper left, confirm, and click Scan again.

  3. Review the scan results, then click Run to complete the Smart Care tasks.

Rest assured, CleanMyMac doesn't delete any user files or app data unless you choose to. Our Safety Database, built over years of experience, prevents cleaning errors and protects user data.

Review results

Once scanning is complete, you'll see the results for each CleanMyMac module in tiles:

  • Total data that can be safely removed to free disk space
  • Number of found threats
  • Number of maintenance tasks to perform
  • App updates available for installation
  • Number of duplicate files ready for removal

Select tasks to run: By default, CleanMyMac selects all Smart Care tasks. You can choose which tasks to skip by clearing the check mark in the upper-left corner of each tile.

Check task details: Review the details of each task, such as items selected for cleanup, maintenance tasks, and malware marked for removal. Click Review in a tile to adjust selections.

If you deselect a module, all associated categories and groups will also be deselected. Similarly, deselecting a category will exclude all groups within it.

Note that deselected modules will still appear in scan results, but their tiles will be grayed out. Click Enable to turn them back on in the scanning settings.

After completing Smart Care, your Mac will be optimized, but for the best results, explore the other modules in CleanMyMac for further improvements.
