Review and close duplicate tabs

(Updated: )

It's easy to open the same page twice without noticing that the first copy is still open somewhere in another window. Over time, these extra copies pile up, take up Mac memory, and make your tab bar harder to use.

Browser Care finds duplicate tabs across all windows of your current Chrome profile and closes the extra copies in a few clicks. Browser Care keeps the most recently opened tab in each group.

Find duplicate tabs

Browser Care treats tabs as duplicates only if their web addresses are exactly the same, including any parameters. For example, example.com/page?id=1 and example.com/page?id=2 aren't duplicates. It checks the tabs from your current Chrome profile.

To find duplicate tabs:

  1. In Browser Care, click Overview.

  2. Find the Duplicate Tabs card.

The card shows how many domains have duplicate tabs and how many tabs are affected.

If there are no duplicates, the card says "No duplicate tabs".

  3. Click the Duplicate Tabs card to expand it.

In the expanded card, tabs with the same web address are grouped together. Each group shows its domain and the number of tabs in it. If the web addresses differ, two groups can show the same domain.

Each tab shows its name and how long it's been open. The tab that was opened most recently has the Newest label.

Close duplicate tabs

You can close duplicates one by one, group by group, or all at once. When you close duplicates by group or all at once, Browser Care keeps the newest tab in each group open.

Close a single tab

  1. In the expanded Duplicate Tabs card, hold the pointer over a tab.

  2. Click Close (The Close button).

    Browser Care closes the tab.

Close all duplicates in a group

  1. In the expanded Duplicate Tabs card, hold the pointer over the group name.

  2. Click Close Group.

Browser Care closes all tabs in the group except the one opened most recently.

Close all duplicates at once

In the expanded Duplicate Tabs card, click Close All Duplicates.

Browser Care closes the extra copies in all groups and keeps the newest tab of each.

To close tabs that have been open for a long time, review old tabs.
