Use Smart Cleanup

If you're not sure which emails to tackle first, Email Cleanup does the initial work for you. It analyzes your mailbox and surfaces the emails most worth cleaning up, organized into ready-made suggestions under Smart Cleanup so you can get started without browsing each category manually.

To explore the suggestions:

1. In CleanMyMac, click My Tools in the sidebar.

2. In Email Cleanup, select an email account from the list, then click Scan.

   If you haven't connected your email account yet, learn how to do it.

   

   Scan time varies based on your mailbox size.

3. Once enough emails are ready to review, CleanMyMac may offer to let you start early — click Review Now, or wait for the full scan to finish.

   

   CleanMyMac then opens the Email Cleanup Manager.

4. Click Smart Cleanup on the left.

   

5. Browse and select emails and senders you want to remove or unsubscribe from.

   CleanMyMac organizes emails into the following groups for easier navigation:

   • Old Promotions — promotional emails that are over six months old
   • Automated Emails — automated emails that are over one month old
   • Forgotten Emails — emails that have stayed unread for over three months
   • Archived Emails — archived emails you may no longer need
   • Top Senders — senders with the most emails in your mailbox

6. Click "Move to Trash" to instantly move the selected emails to your inbox trash, or click the disclosure arrow next to the button and choose one of the following actions:

   • Unsubscribe and Move to Trash — unsubscribe from the selected senders and move their emails to your inbox trash.

   • Only Unsubscribe — unsubscribe from the selected senders without removing their emails.

   • Unsubscribe and Archive — unsubscribe from the selected senders and move their emails to your inbox archive.

   • Only Archive — move the selected emails to your inbox archive.

   

7. In the dialog that appears, click Continue to confirm the action.

8. Review the results summary.

   • To explore the details, click View Log.

   • To return to the Email Cleanup Manager and continue using Smart Cleanup, click Manage More Emails.

   • To return to My Tools, click Done.

     You can also disconnect your email account from here — select the checkbox before clicking Done.
