Background items

(Updated: )

Background items are components that run behind the scenes on your Mac to keep your apps working smoothly. They can include helper tools, scheduled tasks, or monitoring services that don't require direct interaction but ensure core features remain available. For example, a background item might continuously track device health metrics, maintain real-time protection, or prepare data for upcoming scans.

Most background items are small service programs—they run without showing a window and use minimal system resources, so you can enjoy an app's benefits without interruptions. Without these items, some features may not work, or the app might fail to start.

CleanMyMac introduces and uses the following background items:

  • CleanMyMac Menu

The CleanMyMac Menu shows the current performance status of critical aspects of your Mac and offers suggestions to make it more efficient and secure.

If you don't allow this background item, the Menu won't open and none of its features will be available. Also, turning the Menu on or off in CleanMyMac Settings will have no effect.

  • Health Monitor

The Health Monitor provides performance and security data to the CleanMyMac Menu and monitors your Mac for potential issues and malware threats. (Learn more about the Health Monitor background process.)

If you don't allow this background item, the CleanMyMac Menu won't display key elements like hardware monitors and notifications about cleanup or maintenance. Although you can still run malware scans manually, real-time malware monitoring will stop, increasing the risk of undetected threats.

  • Updater

The Updater automatically checks for and installs the latest versions of CleanMyMac. (Learn more about the Updater background process.)

This background item is different from the Updater in the Applications module—the background item updates CleanMyMac itself, while the module updates other apps installed on your Mac.

If you don't allow this background item, CleanMyMac won't update automatically and you'll need to check manually from the menu bar (CleanMyMac > Check for Updates).

  • Agent

The Agent lets CleanMyMac perform operations that require root privileges, such as deleting unnecessary system files. (For more details, refer to Background processes.)

macOS doesn't recognize the Agent as a background item, but rather treats it as a helper tool, so the system will prompt you to install it separately.

If you don't install the Agent, CleanMyMac won't perform certain core functions, such as removing system files or uninstalling apps.
